In response to current industry demand for FX artists with experience with the simulation software Houdini, we are offering students the chance to learn Houdini in the FX specialisation in the Master of Animation and Visualisation.

Our Visual Effects Lead, Dylan Neill, will be mentoring a dedicated team of student FX artists to master Houdini and apply this to the year’s visualisation and animation projects.

Dylan has over 25 years of industry experience in visual effects for motion pictures and advertising specialising in effects simulation, lighting and compositing for companies such as Weta Digital, Animal Logic, Method, Rising Sun Pictures, Mighty Nice and more.

Houdini is a 3D application that works in a purely procedural and non-destructive fashion. It excels at creating physically based effects such as destruction, fire and explosions, fluid simulations, hair, cloth and anything else you can imagine. Because of its flexibility, Houdini is making inroads into more and more departments in the visual effects pipeline and 3D artists who know how to use it are now in high demand.

In addition to the FX simulation project work, Dylan will be running a live action visual effects project during Studio 2 of the masters course to give FX artists, lighters and compositors a chance to experience working on a real world, live-action production.
